Alaska 2002

Hi and welcome to my Alaska 2002 travel log. We traveled up to Alaska from May 19th until May 28th. We had a fantastic time visiting the 49th state.

I was amazed by the vast size of this land and how you could travel for miles without seeing a person.

We left 45 degree Chicago and arrived in 75 degree Anchorage late on Sunday night. When I went to bed at 11:30 p.m. it was still light outside. I never saw nighttime in Anchorage. Anchorage reminded me a lot of Milwaukee.

We got up early on Monday morning to head to the train depot to drop off our luggage and do a little sight seeing in the city. It was 70 degrees and sunny in Anchorage. We walked around downtown for a few hours and did a little shopping. I was going to get you something, but I decided to spend the money on me.

The Alaska Railroad runs a train exclusively for Princess that features domed roofs for viewing and tables for dining. I would recommend the train over the bus to get to Seward. We saw Moose and bald eagles from the train and were allowed to stand on the open-air platform for some great scenery viewing. The train was delayed about one hour leaving Anchorage and arrived in Seward around 6 p.m. We were unable to see Seward since the boat was leaving shortly after our arrival and I was hungry.

We probably experienced the most beautiful sunset of the trip around 11 p.m.

Tomorrow: College Fjord
